'The Lincolnshire Poacher'
- Version 1
-
- When I was bound apprentice in famous Lincolnshire
- I served my master truly for nearly seven long year
- Till I took up to poaching as you shall quickly hear
- Oh it's my delight on a shiny night in the season of the year
-
- As me and my companions were setting up a snare
- The game-keeper was watching us for him we did not care
- For we can wrestle and fight my boys jump over anywhere
- Oh it's my delight on a shiny night in the season of the year
-
- As me and my companions were setting four and five
- And taking of them up again we took a hare alive
- We popped her into a bag my boys and through the woods did steer
- Oh it's my delight on a shiny night in the season of the year
-
- We threw her over our shoulders and wandered through the town
- We called into a neighbours house and sold her for a crown
- We sold her for a crown my boys but I did'nt tell you where
- Oh it's my delight on a shiny night in the season of the year
-
- Well here's success to poaching for I do think it fair
- Bad luck to every game - keeper that would not to sell his deer
- Good luck to every house - keeper that wants to buy a hare
- Oh it's my delight on a shiny night in the season of the year

- Version 2
-
- When I was bound apprentice in famous Lincolnshire,
- Full well I serv'd my master, for more then seven year,
- Till I took up to poaching, as you shall quickly hear.
- Oh, 'tis my delight on a shining night, in the season of the year.
-
- As me and my companions were setting of a snare,
- 'Twas then we spied the game-keeper - for him we did not care.
- For we can wrestle and fight, my boys, and jump o'er anywhere.
- Oh, 'tis my delight on a shining night in the season of the year.
-
- As me and my companions were setting four or five,
- And taking on 'em up again, we caught a hare alive,
- We took the hare alive, my boys, and through the woods did steer.
- Oh, 'tis my delight on a shining night in the season of the year.
-
- I threw him on my shoulder, and then we trudged home,
- We took him to a neighbour's house, and sold him for a crown,
- We sold him for a crown, my boys, but I did not tell you where.
- Oh, 'tis my delight on a shining night in the season of the year.
-
- Bad luck to every magistrate that lives in Lincolnshire.
- Success to every poacher that wants to sell a hare,
- Bad luck to every game-keeper that will not sell his deer.
- Oh, 'tis my delight on a shining night in the season of the year.
